St. George's preschool educates diverse population

Tiny fingers explore gritty letters cut out of sandpaper. Chubby hands clean mirrors or pour water from pitchers. Tinkling voices sing “Clean up, clean up” as they wipe tables.

At St. George’s Preschool in Fredericksburg, the younger crowd learns math, geography, theology, writing, housekeeping and art.

The range of learning opportunities isn’t unique to the downtown preschool. But the socioeconomic diversity of the students is.

Two years ago, when leaders of St. George’s Episcopal Church first explored the idea of opening an early learning center, member Shandel Perron was skeptical.

At the time, she directed a downtown church-run preschool. And parents were increasingly choosing to forgo preschool as the economy forced them to make tough budgeting decisions.

Preschools abound in the Fredericksburg area, offering families an array of choices. And Perron wasn’t sure exactly what St. George’s could offer that wasn’t already on the local menu.
